2020.02.26 Police force overspends by nearly $3 billion Personal allowances over $2.5 billion 9 times higher than budget
The Budget announces the revised accounts of each department for the current year and the budget for the following year. As a result of the Police Force’s handling of the anti-ELAB protests, there has been a significant increase in expenditure for the current year (FY 2019/20), with a revised estimate of $23.59 billion, nearly $3 billion more than the original approved budget. The largest expenditure is on allowances for police officers, revised from the original estimate of $260 million to $2.549 billion, an increase of nearly nine times.
With 35,436 officers in the police force in 2019, an average of $72,000 is paid to each officer.
If we take the current year’s revised estimated expenditure of $23.59 billion, it is a big increase of $3.6 billion or 17.7% compared to last year (2018/2019).
The Budget estimates that the expenditure of the Police Force for the coming year, 2020/21, will continue to increase unabated, with an estimated expenditure of $25.79 billion, representing an increase of 9.3% over the current year’s revision and an even greater increase of 44% when compared to the expenditure of the Police Force five years ago.
